6 February

I took a train to Paddington today for the second round of interviews at Grayling Burckhardt Coveney. Felix Sunley lent me his incredibly posh dark blue suit which saved me a load of money and made me feel almost a banker. I’m amazed to have got this far. GBC is meant to be the best of all the banks and they pay their trainees £10,000 in their first year (although quite a few don’t last that long …).

I arrived at a very grand office in Cheapside on the dot of 9 a.m., along with 11 others. Presumably we are all in competition with each other. It was a gruelling day: there were four separate interviews each lasting an hour. One middleaged woman wanted to know about school and education, another older guy insisted we talk about Middle Eastern politics (FUCK!!!), then there were two young women. The first gave me lists of data to analyse and the other (very thin, dressed in black and with a strong American accent) wanted to know what experience I had of teamwork. While I was trying to think of what the hell to say, I developed a tickle in the back of my throat, tried to disguise it and then embarrassed myself by needing a glass of water.

It’s not going to happen, I can tell.
